TROUBLE IN PARADISE: Ibiza bans After Hours Parties

According to DJ MAG, the government of Ibiza, a small island off the coast of Spain widely regarded as the club capitol of the world has banned clubs from being open between the hours of 6am and 10am.

This is a massive blow to a place widely accepted as epitomizing freedom and expression, and is also culturally important to the global movement of dance music as many artist site Ibiza as a place that inspires the creation of new and different music.

In Miami Beach, just after the turn of the Millennium, the city commission voted to ban after hours venues that called themselves "Juice Bars" along with outlawing 18+ venues as well. Shortly thereafter the city of Miami wanted to revive the dilapidated Park West district of Downtown Miami, and released a limited number of 24 hour liquor licenses and Miami's downtown "After Hours" culture was born. Now with development of high rise residences, that culture may in danger as well. Only time will tell, but it seems no matter where in the world you are...there always someone who wants to keep us from dancing.

Club Space Live Broadcasts - Remember Those?

So as many of you may remember, a few years ago there was a radio station created in Miami focused on dance music called Party 93.1.

I had the pleasure of working there for as the station's Promotions Director and on-air personality. Every Saturday night for an extended period of time I would broadcast live for three hours from Club Space. At the time, Space had one of the largest and most consistent line-up's of names in the country and I was previleged to broadcast with names like Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Ferry Corsten, Paul Van Dyk, Oscar G, Steve Lawler, Roger Sanchez and many more.

In fact, just behind the DJ booth was a tiny little bathroom just big enough for a toilet and sink that would double as my broadcast booth. I would also use the bathroom to interview these artist before their set, so in all probability I have the somewhat questionable record for being in a bathroom with the most big name DJ's in the world. (INSERT SMARMY CLUB/BATHROOM JOKE HERE)

To me, those broadcasts will forever be etched in my memory as some of the most special moments I have ever experienced in 15 years I have been clubbing.

Recently someone sent me a download link to one of the broadcasts featuring Tiesto Live From Club Space on August 18th, 2002....

I remember it vividly as a definiting moment for my understand of what a DJ can do. Where the music, lights and crowd collide to create a breif explosion of energy.

When I listen to this mix, it still brings me back to those moments (with a chill running down my back.)

The Two-Time #1 DJ In The World Says The Top 100 List Is Really #2

Photos by Seth: Red Eye Productions

German trance god and self described "music geek" Paul Van Dyk responds to his matriculation from #1 to #4 on the influencial DJ MAG TOP 100 in a recent interview with .

PVD states: “With all the cheating and bullshit that went on this year, I don’t think it is an honour to be on top of that list. Because the question still is, ‘did the people who are in top of that list cheat or not?’ Because you don’t really know."

In this year's competition, severall DJ's were disqualafied from the poll for multiple votes from the same IP address. Most notably accused perhaps were West Coast spinners DJ Dan and Christopher Lawerence (PIC), whose shared marketing manager pulled some electronic trickery to boost his guys up on the list. The two were disqualafied, the marketing manager terminated immediatly and Dan and Chris were eventually exonnerated by magazines staffers.

Is Trance Dead? This Guy Seems To Think So...

Photo By Seth: Red Eye Productions

Dance music pundit and west coast media scribe Dennis Romero has written a fascinating article about the state of trance music:

"...by the millennium, trance had melted down into an ecstasy-fueled orgy of synth arpeggios-gone-wild. If there’s good trance out there today, I’d like to know where to find it. It certainly isn’t in the super-clubs, where Armani Exchange-adorned dorks with glow sticks and bottle-service tables have turned the trance scene into a satire about the shallowness of contemporary capitalism."

A3's Paris Hilton Run-Ins

Ok, so she is in Miami ALL THE TIME, and we are often out with cameras. But really we just aren't these asshole paparazzi guys that jump out of the bushes looking for a panty-less crotch shot.
But when the oportunity arises, we keep our cameras rolling.
We caught her during Art Basel at the Versace mansion (ok, fine I'll call it Casa Casuarina)

Our real question is, who the hell is that guy with the weird fuzzy hat?

South Beach Undercover: The Complete Episodes

One of our most popular series by far, "South Beach Undercover" follows the continuing story of Fabrizio, a former model turned incompetent cop trying to make his way on South Beach.

We are presently working on developing this short form series into a full half hour TV show.

How To Win Fake Friends And Influence Shallow People: TIP #1

Photo By Seth: Red Eye Productions

Sometimes its all about who you know, but if you really don't know anyone and no one really knows you, then here's a trick that helps.

The next time you go to a pre-party, mixer, cocktail party etc (not a club - too noisy) bring a friend with you. When you walk into the venue, have your friend go one direction while you go the other. While you individually walk through the crowd, ask as many people as you come in contact you "Hey, have you guys seen ________ from ________."

Most people will say "nope," some will give you a dirty look, even more will simply ignore you for not being important enough to garner thier full attention. For those who simply ask "WHO?" have a quick and consise reponse that peaks their interest:

"Wow, you dont know______ from ________? You have to meet him/her." (Have a look of mild surprise and add a quick line that teases their curiosity but walk away right after you mention it) "I haven't seen him since the accident....so I wonder what he looks like now."

Keep this up while walking though the crowd. Finally, rendevouz with your companion somewhere in the middle and as you finally greet eachother, make a big loud scene like you haven't seen them in years.

As you walk together through the party, go up to a few of the people you asked earlier and introduce them to your friend as well as yourself. If thy ask your friend about the "accident" simply have him/her be mysterious and say "I don't really like to go into it."

Try it and see!

Fabulous 300 Member: Beau Beasely

The definition of "party boy" Beau has an outrageous energy that adds to any event. For a stint he was seen as one of the contestants on BIG BROTHER, now when your closet is "un-fabulous" but your credit is, he will help you completly change your style as your personnal shopper. He can be seen often at Karu & Y (mainly because he's dating one of the owners) but also various private events, soirees, mixers and any other party with free flowing drinks and people who will pay attention to him.
